LoL vs Dota

Both LoL and DotA follow a very similar rule set and gameplay formula: two teams, typically of five players each, try to destroy each other's bases, which are at opposite corners of a map. Three lanes connect the bases, which are lined with towers. At regular intervals, AI controlled creeps (or minions) spawn at each base and walk down each lane towards the opposing base. Players can kill the creeps for experience and, if they get the killing blow, money. As players level up they can unlock skills and buy items to improve their damage output, damage mitigation or utility.

Both games have massive rosters of heroes (or champions) to play as, and both follow the same flow: slow, meticulous last-hitting and harassment early on, jumping between lanes to try to gank an opponent a little further in, and coalescing and moving as a team for major pushes towards the end.
